The increase in petrol and diesel price

The increase in the price of diesel and petrol is an unwarranted action at this stage. Not only is it going to bring unnecessary hardship and misery to the poor, but it is also a threat to RSA’s national food security.

All production of agricultural products for the local and international markets will feel the impact of the higher fuel prices. The purpose of the Master Plan for Agriculture is based on the growth and development of the agriculture market, such as higher production, increased employment, and the growth of emerging farmers accessing the agriculture market. The fuel price increase will hinder this.

The principles of higher exports from South Africa to, among others, BRICS and other countries are under threat, which will weaken RSA’s position and standing in the international markets. Agricultural production and exports have been pillars of strength in our gross national production for the last five years. With significant unemployment already in South Africa, the threat to food security is a recipe for disaster.

The higher fuel price will almost certainly lead to a reduction in the labor force, not only in agriculture but also in the economy in general. The poorest of the poor will suffer the most.
