Benoni_ On Friday 28 October 2022 at about 22:10, members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Bronberg Precinct, while performing law enforcement and crime prevention duties, received information about a hijacking in progress on Harry Gwala Road and spotted the hijacked vehicle, a gold Toyota sedan, passing by on the N12 Snake Road off-ramp.
The vehicle was followed by the members, however, sped off when members attempted to stop it. The three unknown male occupants opened fire against the officers as they fled, bringing the vehicle to an abrupt stop on Golden Drive in Benoni. The suspects fled the scene on foot and abandoned the vehicle.
When the law enforcers searched the vehicle, two (2) firearms, namely a Baredda with four (4) blank rounds and a 38 revolver with two (2) live rounds with serial numbers removed, were recovered along with four (4) cell phones suspected to be stolen.
Fingerprints were taken from the vehicle by the South African Police Service (SAPS) LCRC. The cell phones have been booked at Benoni police station pending investigation. The vehicle involved was booked at Van Ryn Deep SAP13.
