Worst performing Tembisa SAPS putting resident’s lives at risk

The residents of Tembisa are living in fear of falling victim to the escalating crime in the area.

Tembisa Police Station is constantly ranked among the 30 worst-performing police stations in the country. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety MEC, Faith Mazibuko, is not doing enough to ensure that the Tembisa Police Station gets the necessary resources to prevent and fight crime.

According to the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2022/23, Tembisa SAPS is ranked number six nationally and number one in Gauteng in terms of rape cases reported. The rape cases have increased from 27 in the last year’s fourth quarter to 62 in the fourth quarter of the 2022/23 financial year.

The following crimes have increased at Tembisa Police Station compared to the fourth quarter reports since 2021:

• Community-reported serious crimes have increased by 80 from 1473 to 1553,
• Contact crime increased by 63 from 864 to 927,
• Common Assault increased by 38 from 236 to 274 and
• Kidnapping has increased by 19 from 21 to 40.

This increase in crime is worrying and clearly indicates that the police do not have crime intelligence-gathering capabilities. This police station needs urgent intervention to clamp down on these serious crimes and ensure the safety of its residents.

The DA will be submitting questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to ascertain why Tembisa Police Station is constantly being ranked as one of the worst performing police stations in the country. We also want to know how many wardens have been deployed in Tembisa to work with the police in fighting crime.
