IFP Statement on Explosion in City of Johannesburg CBD

The IFP Gauteng wishes to convey its shock over the sudden destructive explosion that occurred on Bree and Joubert Streets in the City of Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday, 20 July 2023.

While the actual cause of the explosion is still under investigation, it is estimated that no less than 34 vehicles – mostly passenger taxis – were damaged, leading to some injuries and one confirmed fatality. We wish those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery and also convey our deepest sympathies to the family of the one man who died from the tragic incident.

The IFP Gauteng wishes to commend the City of Johannesburg’s emergency services officers for their swift and rapid response to this unprecedented incident. As the IFP, we also wish to urge the public to take necessary precautions and steer away from the area for their own safety.

The IFP urges that immediate action be taken to investigate the cause of the explosion and reconstruct the affected roads, as they remain critical economic arteries in the Johannesburg economy. We trust that the Gauteng and City of Johannesburg governments will work together effectively and expeditiously to restore normality in the area.
