From the small beginnings of a movement rooted in an online platform, strengthened by a robust social media presence and nurtured through strategic partnerships with key business players, Vuka Darkie has grown into a formidable brand. At the helm of this success is Chairperson Khulani Skosana, who has emerged as a prolific entrepreneur, earning multiple accolades for his work.
On 15 November, Skosana received recognition from the Township Entrepreneurs Association (TEA) at the Black Excellence Awards ceremony held in Thembisa. He was honoured for kasi entrepreneurial excellence, in recognition of his contribution to job creation within the township economy.
The Vuka Darkie Container Mall in Rondebult was first piloted in 2019 and has since grown into a vibrant business hub. Today, it hosts a variety of enterprises within its precinct, catering to the lifestyle needs of its target market.
Skosana’s worldview is deeply rooted in Pan-Africanism, with core values inspired by his grandmother, whom he credits with instilling in him a strong sense of self-belief, principles, and a moral compass. He also draws inspiration from iconic leaders such as Marcus Garvey, Steve Biko, and Dr UzwiLezwe Radebe, as well as their respective movements. He views business as a tool for legacy-building, socio-economic development, and a sustainable vehicle for black empowerment. Through its upward trajectory, Vuka Darkie has also expanded its global reach, anchored in building brand awareness for black-owned businesses.
Reflecting on the award, Skosana said it holds significant meaning for him as it recognises his impact within the township entrepreneurship ecosystem. He noted that the recognition affirms that his work extends beyond his immediate community to other townships and communities.
“It is an honour that brings heartfelt jubilation to be recognised by such a prestigious institution,” he said.
Skosana emphasised that what continues to drive him across all his business ventures is the desire to create a positive turnaround for his community. “For me, it’s all about impact over income. Success is often measured by flashy possessions or finances, but I measure value by the impact I have on another black person,” he explained.
Highlighting one of the major challenges faced by small businesses—limited access to markets—he stressed the importance of using his platform to create brand awareness. This, he said, enables him to create both direct and indirect employment opportunities for the people and brands he collaborates with.
Alluding to the teachings of one of his key influences, Malcolm X, Skosana shared: “If ‘I’ is replaced with ‘we’, even illness becomes wellness.”
He further emphasised that, “It is of paramount importance that we view black excellence from a collective perspective rather than an individual one.”
Offering advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, Skosana underscored the importance of conducting thorough due diligence before entering any industry. “When you are knowledgeable, you are better equipped to identify the stumbling blocks and loopholes within your industry,” he said.
As an influencer speaking to young and emerging entrepreneurs, he added that research, learning from industry leaders, and understanding the competitive landscape are critical to gaining an edge.
“You can replicate, but don’t cut and paste. Maintain your own unique identity,” he advised.
He concluded by emphasising the importance of collaboration. “You cannot do everything on your own. Through collaboration, you turn your weaknesses into strengths by partnering with strengths where you do not.”
