Katlehong change maker helps youth beat drugs, find hope

By Ncamiso Dlamini
Growing up in Katlehong showed a local activist how tough life can be for young people and families dealing with poverty, drugs, and no opportunities. Seeing young people in their community get lost to drugs because they had nothing else to do lit a fire inside them. “Growing up here taught me how important it is to support each other,” they say. That lesson shapes how they help people today.
This passion has already changed lives. Kgothatso, a young person the activist mentored who was fighting drug problems. Through guidance, support, and finding better things to do, Kgothatso turned his life around. The big moment came when Kgothatso fixed things with his family and found a love for accounting. Now, Kgothatso is doing great in his studies and inspires others. A key part of this work is the yearly Batho Pele Movement Talent Show. It’s a big party with music, dance, and art where the whole community comes together to have fun and raise money for a good cause. The vibe is lekker and full of life! Stories like Kgothatso’s show everyone the real difference this work makes.
The activist is proud of helping ten people directly and the show’s success, but also points to bigger wins: outreach programmes making real changes in Katlehong. They have seen more people getting involved and fewer young people using drugs. But the biggest headache? Finding steady money and resources to keep going and do more.
The activist’s big dream is to open a youth center in Katlehong, a safe space where young people can get help with school, find mentors, and get support. With more backing, they could help many more youth and families. Their message to other young South Africans? “Change starts with you. Start small, but start. When we work together, we can do amazing things.”
The article aims to inspire readers to connect with and support this vital Katlehong initiative. Individuals and organizations can contribute through financial donations, volunteering their time, or sharing valuable skills. Material donations, particularly educational resources and sports equipment, are also greatly appreciated. Sustaining the energy for this demanding work comes from focusing on the positive impact achieved and the inherent resilience of the community, a spirit embodied by “Man T,” representing the tenacity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to creating lasting positive change in Katlehong.
