Lakeside Mall proudly announces the launch of its Heart of Gold initiative, an ongoing project designed to give back to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries on Pensioners Day. The initiative provides pensioners with tea and biscuits while they wait for their payouts, creating a warm, welcoming, and dignified environment where senior citizens can relax, sit comfortably, and enjoy their treat.
The initiative is supported by Lakeside Mall’s anchor tenants, with Pick n Pay (Entrance 5, upper level) and Shoprite (Entrance 2, lower level) playing key roles in ensuring its success.
“The inspiration for our Heart of Gold initiative came from witnessing the heartfelt efforts of Pick n Pay, who regularly offer tea and coffee to pensioners. We recognised a similar need on the Shoprite side of the mall and decided to expand the initiative. Our elderly patrons often endure long waits during payout days, and we wanted to turn those moments into something more compassionate and uplifting,” said Prudence Thanjekwayo, Marketing Manager at Lakeside Mall. In addition to refreshments, retailers at the mall show their support by offering exclusive specials and promotions on payout days, enhancing value for pensioners and strengthening community ties.
Launched in early 2025, the Heart of Gold initiative will continue as a gesture of appreciation to the loyal elderly shoppers who choose Lakeside Mall as their preferred destination. Lakeside Mall also welcomes businesses and organisations interested in partnering with this community-driven initiative to join in making a difference. “We’re proud to call Benoni our home, and through initiatives like this, we hope to keep building meaningful, lasting relationships with those who walk through our doors every day,” added Thanjekwayo.
