A seismic shift is rumbling through the local music scene as Lekompo, the blazing-hot genre born in the heart of Limpopo, is taking a formidable toll on Gauteng’s airwaves and social gatherings. Originally propelled to fame by stars like Makhadzi, Shebeshix, Shandes, and Mazzvile, this vibrant sound has found a powerful new champion in Msheshaphantsi, an artist on a mission to make it the definitive soundtrack of South Africa.
Based in Villa Lisa, Gauteng, Msheshaphantsi has become a key figure in the genre’s migration, introducing the energetic rhythms of Lekompo to his community and beyond. He is set to fuel this fire with the release of a hot new single, “Ntakaneng,” on October 31, 2025, a track that serves as the vanguard for his upcoming EP.
The title “Ntakaneng,” which translates to “they should discuss me,” is a bold statement of intent. The song’s concept was born from Msheshaphantsi’s own observations in Villa Lisa, where he noticed a growing, passionate audience for Lekompo music right here in Gauteng.
“I saw a gap to bring the genre directly to the people of Gauteng,” Msheshaphantsi explained. “I realized that Gauteng is the hub; it unites all South Africans, from every province and every corner of the world. This is the perfect stage to launch Lekompo to a wider audience.”
What makes his story even more compelling is his enduring passion. At 43, Msheshaphantsi defies ageist stereotypes in an industry often focused on youth, proving that musical innovation and energy are ageless.
He believes that music is a universal language of happiness. “Music is happiness for all kinds of humans, despite language,” he stated. His goal is to provide a soundtrack for unity and celebration. “The festive season deserves hot music that will make people united—whether at home, at fun places, at weddings, or in their moving transportation within our entire country, South Africa. It’s not just for Ekurhuleni or Gauteng only.”
With the upcoming release of “Ntakaneng,” Msheshaphantsi is not just dropping a song; he is issuing an invitation for the entire nation to feel the rhythm, bridging provincial sounds with a metropolitan heartbeat.
