Maths Scitech Academy visited Lesiba Secondary School to award the best performing learners in the school in Maths and Physical Sciences.
“We call these awards the Xman awards, which are awards that are given to performing good learners in Mathematics and Physical Sciences”.
Math Scitech academy is an institution that tutors students from Grades 8 to 12. Mthokozisi Mhlongo and Xolani Mangqu are the founders of the Academy. The academy aims to create an inclusive environment that tutors the learners, specifically those who do Physical Science and Mathematics.
“We want to embrace that because we want to erase a stigma or the phobia that has been created that physical science and Mathematics those are difficult streams”.
Hence in this world, we experience shortages of skill sets and knowledge based on maths and physics with the load-shedding, water-shedding food shedding and the unemployment rate that is going on.
The Academy believes that they can make a difference by embracing math and physical science, rewarding it, elevating it, and supporting that kind of faculty. In the process, the academy attempted to enrol the best-performing pupils in mathematics and physical sciences.
In future as an academy, the aim is to go internationally where Xman awards are essential for anyone who is in Maths and Science.
The event was solely based on us, we just wanted schools to offer us time and their students but they didn’t allow us so we opted to go to Lesiba Secondary School.
However, at this point, due to a lack of resources and other factors, we just started at Lesiba Secondary School because it is closer to our home and the community. A few schools we attempted to go to turned us down.
The entire purpose of the event was to benefit the learners, the academy only asked schools to give us their time and students, but they refused, so they decided to go to Lesiba Secondary School instead.
Lesiba Secondary School is the only school that welcomed us with open arms because it was the first edition of awards presenting those awards.
“We had a guest speaker wich as Dr Thabiso Mabena(29) who is a qualified dentist with 2 degrees and also HOD from Mathematics and Physical Sciences from Lesiba Secondary School and also Deputy principal was present”.
