Mathulana Foundations’ Annual Elderly Women’s Football Tournament: A Vibrant Celebration of Community and Athleticism

Mathulana Foundation – an NGO from Windmill Park that dedicates its service to the community through elderly fitness club and soup kitchen – celebrated its annual elderly women’s football tournament with a stellar showdown that was made up of four teams of mature elderly women on 24 May 2025, In Windmill Park Sports Grounds. The grounds came alive as four teams, made up composed of Gugo Thandayo FC – the hosting team from Windmill Park – who went against Old Star FC, Vlakfontein (2-1), and, Community Women’s FC who went up against Kuyenzeka FC from Mayfield, Benoni (2-0).

“We started this tournament in 2024, and there has been great anticipation for this day from all teams who have prepared for the day since last year. For the past 10 months has been training for this day.” said Phumzile Nwaogwugwu, Deputy Chairperson Mathulana Foundation.

The tournament’s annual matche organised by Mathulana Foundation,balso doubled as the celebration of the 1st Anniversary.Full of cheer, merriment and gospel music in the background – which made the gogos and fans alike dance with joy the one day tournament brought inspiration and is a living testament that are stellar athletic performers and not only nurtures. It was supported also by big well known brands around the country and community the likes of Nedbank – the main sponsor of the event, African Bank, Easy Pay, Debonairs and Drink O Pop.

Mbuso Magwaza, Mathulana Foundation CEO said that “because the grannies are old, this become inspiration for the younger generation, especially looking at that the younger generation often dabble in a lot of things like substance abuse, when they look up to elders they can be given role models that help them aspire to be involved in sporting activities. Also for the elderly who are mostly the head of household soccer is important as a form of exercise to keep their mental and physical health so that they can remain active contributors in their homes and community.” She said that her organisation was looking forward to having the tournament grow bigger going forward to encompass more people.

Nedbank was the main sponsor of the event, providing the tournament’s trophy and medals, among other resources Tia Moonsamy, Nedbank Marketing Manager (Lambton) as the match began by motivating and all the teams good luck saying “dream big, work hard and never give up.” She added “we want to give back to the community not just through our banking services, but also through the dedication and passion we have for community work, we want to ensure that we also give back to causes that make our society better. ”

The tournament also garnered support from big brands around the community such as Debonairs Pizza Windmill, Drink O Pop, Africa Bank, Easypay – who played their part by providing their unique offerings to the players and guests.

Although Gugothandayo FC, under the umbrella of Mathulana Foundation’s teams is well known for ranking high in the tournaments as a winner, this time Community Women’s FC came out strong as the day’s champion, taking the cup, in a match with Kuyenzeka FC where they won 7-0 against challenger Kuyenzeka FC.

The tournament also crowned two women of the match who were coming from teams Community Women’s FC and Allstar FC, respectively “Slender”as the Women of the Match, and “Makhumalo” as goalkeeper of the tournament.
