Matric Class of 2024 Makes History with 87.3% Pass Rate

The Matric Class of 2024 has achieved an impressive 87.3% pass rate, the highest in South Africa’s history.

“I’m proud to announce that 615,429 learners passed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams this year – more than ever before. The national pass rate increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3% in 2024,” said Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube on Monday.

Speaking at the results announcement in Johannesburg, the Minister called the achievement a moment of pride for the country.

Bachelor Passes on the Rise
Nearly half of the matriculants earned Bachelor passes, qualifying them for university admission.

“This year, 47.8% of learners achieved Bachelor passes, up from 40.9% in 2023. In 2014, we had 150,752 Bachelor passes, and now, in 2024, that number has more than doubled to 337,158,” said Gwarube.

KwaZulu-Natal led the pack with 84,470 Bachelor passes, followed by Gauteng with 66,979 and the Eastern Cape with 45,662. Impressively, 67% of these passes came from schools in poorer communities, showing significant progress.

“This means learners from disadvantaged areas are increasingly able to study fields like medicine, engineering, and accounting,” she added.

Record-Breaking Distinctions
The class of 2024 also secured 319,651 distinctions, 65,000 more than in 2023. Key improvements were seen in subjects like Mathematics, with every province increasing its distinctions.

KwaZulu-Natal had the highest distinction rate at 10.8%, followed by the Western Cape at 6.3%, and Gauteng at 5.3%. Mpumalanga and Limpopo also made notable strides.

Maths and Science Results
In 2024, 69.1% of learners passed Mathematics, up from 63.5% in 2023. However, Physical Sciences saw a slight drop, with a pass rate of 75.6%, down from 76.2% last year.

Gwarube highlighted the need to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy to boost participation and performance in these critical subjects.

Improved School Performance
The number of high schools achieving pass rates between 80% and 100% grew from 4,493 in 2023 to 5,387 in 2024. Fewer schools fell into the underperforming category.

Nearly 97% of Grade 12 learners enrolled in 2024 wrote their NSC exams, a notable increase from the previous year. Among them were over 6,000 learners with special education needs and more than 556,000 learners receiving social grants.

Celebrating Top Achievers
Earlier on Monday, the Minister and MTN hosted a breakfast to honour 39 top matric achievers.

“This year’s results show our schooling system is maturing. However, we still have work to do to ensure consistent quality improvements,” Gwarube concluded.

South Africa celebrates the resilience and dedication of the Class of 2024.
