The Gauteng Department of Health, led by MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, together with Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza and local Councillors, conducted a food safety blitz at local spaza shops in Ekurhuleni Townships on November 1.
This initiative aimed to educate the public about food safety, monitor compliance with food safety standards by local businesses, and protect public health.
After inspecting the spaza shop in Alra Park, many of the food items were expired, dented, and did not look fit for human consumption.
MEC Ralehoko stated that the two spaza shops in Alra Park do not comply with food safety regulations which caused them to close down and the food was confiscated.
During the inspection many of the food items were past their expiration dates, food products were packed closely with non-perishable foods, the shops lacked ventilation and pets were found in the stores.
To prevent the expired food from being sold to the community, the items were confiscated.
