March isn’t just a month when winter turns into spring; it’s also a time to celebrate and honour the important work of Social Workers around the world. Social Work Month recognizes the hard work and impact of these dedicated professionals who help individuals, families, and communities in need.
Mokoena Mathonkha, a seasoned Social Worker at the Gauteng Department of Social Development, specializes in the statutory unit. Her journey since graduating from North-West University in 2019 has been challenging yet fulfilling. She’s committed to supporting children and families, aiming to keep them together and ensure every child’s safety and well-being.
Despite facing obstacles like heavy workloads and limited resources, Mokoena remains dedicated to her mission. Social work, for her, is more than just a job; it’s a calling driven by the satisfaction of helping others, especially those who can’t repay the kindness.
Mokoena’s work involves handling diverse cases, like one where she ensured a child athlete’s safe participation in an international event. She approaches her clients with a focus on systemic and developmental perspectives, valuing the importance of social justice and inclusivity.
To manage the emotional demands of her job, Mokoena prioritizes self-care and continuous learning. Her resilience, dedication, and compassion serve as an inspiration for others to join her in promoting social justice and well-being for everyone.
