Reiger Park Schools Start the Year with a Boost of Inspiration and Support

By Ncamiso Dlamini
The first day of school at Oos Rand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation in Reiger Park was marked by excitement and a strong sense of purpose as learners were welcomed by Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, MMC for Roads and Transport Planning Cllr Andile Mngwevu, and Gauteng MEC for Environment Shyla Peters. The day set a positive tone for the new academic year, emphasizing the importance of education, community support, and environmental stewardship.
Mayor Xhakaza, addressing the learners, underlined the critical role education plays in shaping a brighter future. “The education of our children is everyone’s responsibility. Communities should give full support to school programmes in their areas,” he said. He commended the investment in the Oos Rand School of Specialisation, which aligns with the Aerotropolis concept—a vision that promotes hospitality and tourism in the region.
Learners were encouraged to aim high, with Mayor Xhakaza highlighting the City’s bursary programme as a valuable resource to support further studies. He explained how the Aerotropolis concept ties into the school’s specialization in hospitality and tourism, inspiring learners to see the real-world applications of their education.
MEC Shyla Peters echoed this sentiment, urging learners to stay focused and dedicated from the very start of the year. “You are all capable of being the best-performing learners. It requires focus and dedication,” she said, motivating them to make the most of their opportunities.
The day’s activities included the symbolic planting of trees at the school by Mayor Xhakaza, MMC Mngwevu, and MEC Peters. The initiative highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility and left a lasting reminder of the day’s inspirational messages. The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation also contributed by donating soccer kits to the school, adding a touch of excitement for the students.
The second stop of the #Back2School programme was at Reiger Park Secondary School, where Mayor Xhakaza delivered a motivational message to welcome learners back. He reminded them of their potential to be the future leaders of the City. “Accumulating skills is key to a brighter tomorrow,” he emphasized, while also reassuring them of the City’s efforts to expand its bursary programme for deserving students.
The vibrant start to the school year in Reiger Park highlighted the collective commitment of local leaders to education, environment, and community development. With such strong support and inspiring messages, learners are poised to make the most of 2025 and achieve new heights of success.
