Rondebult sinkhole referred to the council for geoscience

The City of Ekurhuleni has referred the Rondebult sinkhole to the Council for Geoscience (CGS) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE). The referral of the matter to the two institutions follows the city’s finding that the sinkhole is not dolomite-related and might be linked to the mining history of the area concerned.

As a precautionary measure, the road has been closed to traffic until further notice, and the city will continue to monitor the area.

The City appeals to motorists to use alternative routes. Furthermore, members of the public are advised to stay clear of the site as the stability of the road and the surface nearby cannot be guaranteed.
