Samuel Munyai, a dedicated 66-year-old athlete from the Tshepo Ya Sechaba Organisation in Dawn Park, recently achieved remarkable success at the Provincial Older Person Golden Games.
Competing in the 800m sprint for the 60-69 age group, Munyai clinched first place at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort on September 5. This outstanding performance has secured him a spot in the upcoming National Games, where he will proudly represent his province against the nation’s best senior athletes.
The Golden Games, organized by the Department of Sport, Art and Recreation in partnership with the Department of Social Development and supported by the Ekurhuleni Older Persons Forum, celebrated the spirit of active aging. The event featured a diverse range of sports, including track events and race walking, attracting both seasoned competitors and newcomers eager to showcase their abilities.
Munyai expressed immense pride in his achievement, attributing his success to the unwavering support from his family and friends.
Cynthia Nhlapho, the founder of Tshepo Ya Sechaba, commended Munyai for his accomplishments and highlighted the crucial role of community support in fostering healthy lifestyles among older individuals.
Nhlapho shared her excitement about Munyai’s qualification for the National Games, stating, “I am thrilled for Samuel and hopeful he will excel in the National rounds.” Her optimism reflects the collective enthusiasm surrounding the event and the commitment to promoting active aging.
