SETA Celebrates Women in Transport for Women’s Month

By Sbongile Sokela

On August 16, the Springs Education Transport Association (SETA) celebrated Women’s Month for Women in Scholar Transport at SETA Office No. 211, Bophelong Centre, Springs. SETA and Brakpan scholar transport came together to honour the amazing women who are making a difference in the scholar transport industry.

The event was filled with joy and friendship as women of all ages gathered to celebrate. It highlighted the important role women play in scholar transport, an industry often led by men. These women have taken on the challenge, ensuring kids get to and from school safely every day.

The celebration was made even more special with a delightful choir performance that entertained the crowd. In a heartwarming display of appreciation, the men in attendance served the women with drinks and food, making sure they felt pampered and taken care of on their special day.

SETA’s commitment to leadership, safety, and community wellness was clear throughout the celebration. As an organization that started in April 2024 to improve road safety and use technology in transport, SETA used the occasion to reflect on its journey and reaffirm its dedication to making a difference.

MP Thoko Magagula paid tribute to Margaret Gazu, a remarkable woman from Kwa-Thema who played a key role in the 1956 March. “As we celebrate women, we honor their achievements worldwide, recognize the progress, and acknowledge the work done,” Magagula said. “Women’s Month is a time to raise awareness about inequalities, including gender-based violence, and to empower women and girls.”

Mrs. Nana Sikhakhane, the social worker, encouraged women to seek help when needed, saying, “We look at your problem and offer solutions. We service Springs and some parts of Kwa-Thema. We are based at Springs.”

“We are here to fix each other’s crown; the time of looking down at each other has come to an end,” said Bishop Mapule.

As a token of appreciation, gifts were presented to the speakers.

Busisiwe Shongwe, the Interim Organising Committee of Women’s Day Event Chairperson, thanked everyone for coming and participating, emphasizing the importance of celebrating women’s achievements. She also appreciated Brakpan scholar transport for working together on this event, highlighting that “this doesn’t end here — we are building a relationship to work together on scholar patrol cross-border.”
