Suspect arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms and live ammunition

On Saturday, 5 October 2024. A 30-year-old suspect has been arrested for having unlicensed firearms and ammunition, two times rifles, one shotgun, one times pistol, and 1200 times ammunition. This was after the information was received by the Gauteng Provincial Head Office (PHO), and the unit of Serious Violent Crimes (SVCs) that there is a suspect who is their person of interest and has unlicensed firearms and live ammunition. The team from the PHO of the SVCs unit with the assistance of the local police members, visited the suspect’s place of residence in Spruitview, where they couldn’t find him.

As a result, Police had to use other avenues to locate their suspects, and it was discovered that the suspect was in Pretoria. Upon seeing that, the Police were on his tail and the suspect handed himself over to the authorities (Police) in the presence of his lawyer. Police had to search the vehicle of the suspect, and the search yielded positive results as there were various calibers of firearms and live ammunition in the suspect’s vehicle covered with a blanket.

According to Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa of the Katlehong SAPS, the suspect was asked to produce licenses for those firearms and ammunition, and he failed to do so. He was then placed under arrest and was charged with being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition under section 60 of 2000 of the Firearms Control Act.

“All the firearms and ammunition confiscated will be sent to ballistic for further testing if it was not used for any other commission of a crime within the Katlehong policing precinct and in the Republic. The suspect will be expected to appear before the Magistrate at Palm Ridge Magistrate Court soon,” said Mtwa.

The Station Commander of Police in SAPS Katlehong, Brigadier Albertina Vesi, has welcomed the recovery of those firearms and ammunition as well as the arrest of the suspect. She further pleaded with the community to give Police information about those who are suspected to be having illegal firearms. Such information can be shared anonymously on MySAPS App or our crime office line, which is 011 617 3686 alternative Crime-Stop at 08600 10111. Information received will be kept strictly confidential at all times.
