The City of Ekurhuleni has sent more help to sort out the trash buildup in parts of Kempton Park and Thembisa after a company stopped their services last Tuesday because of payment issues. This caused rubbish to pile up in places like Norkem Park, Kempton West, Terenure Birch Acres, Thembisa, Olifantsfontein, and Midstream.
To tackle this, the municipality moved extra resources from other areas to deal with the backlog and stop illegal dumping.
Today, MMC for Environment and Waste Management, Cllr Leshaka Manamela, led a team to start the Clean Your Kasi, Manje! Namhlanje! Campaign. They focused on stopping illegal dumping, picking up litter, and collecting trash in Phomolong, Winnie Mandela, Birch Acres, and Esselen Park – key areas leading into the affected spots.
“We had to step in to fix the contract issue. Our campaign helps us quickly give better services to our people. We’re using our own staff and equipment to become less reliant on contractors. We thank residents for their patience and promise to clear the backlog ASAP,” said MMC Manamela.
They plan to extend this effort to all affected areas, working hard over the weekend to clear everything by Sunday. Meanwhile, negotiations with the service provider will continue to resolve any remaining problems and get waste removal services back on track.
