“I have hosted women’s football events for years here in Tembisa, and have seen the resilience of players that demonstrated “Queens” to me, thus the name.”
Bonolo Mokoatle, founder of the Tembisa Queens Festival (TQF), wanted something local; something players and teams will relate to, and TQF was perfect, as it resembles their home and character.
Bonolo specialises in women’s football, and they are an NPC. They host for Tembisa teams.
They are just less than over six months, and had to forge certain partnerships in order to access facilities.
“In the first season of the Tembisa Queens, we have managed to kick-off with 12 well-structured teams, which is very rare in our local women’s football. We have managed to host a First Aid course for coaches, and we want to have 24 teams in the upcoming years, with a sole idea of identifying more local talent and creating opportunities not only on players but also on coaches and administrators and also creating job opportunities.”
Bonolo is known for creating opportunities for young girls through her tournaments and capacity building programs, using sport as a tool to tackle social challenges faced by young Tembisa girls. She draws inspiration from the NWSL in USA, currently best league in the world.
“Tembisa is known for having produced many footballers, both on females and males through many Kasi tournaments happening every year.”
They are open for anyone who wants to join, however only before the kick-off.
