The City of Ekurhuleni celebrates National Arbor Day

Spring is the perfect time to embrace nature by preserving and planting trees. In a collaborative effort, the City of Ekurhuleni and multiple government departments responsible for environmental development have diligently executed strategies to enhance and maintain the city’s streets and infrastructure, primarily used by its residents.

In conjunction with the annual National Clean-Up and Recycling Week program held from September 11th to 16th, the MMC of Environmental Resources and Waste Management, Eunice Matlokga, and other stakeholders from the City of Ekurhuleni paid a visit to Slindokuhle Primary School on September 15th. Their mission? To educate students on the importance of environmental care, cleanliness, and tree planting.

National Arbor Day is celebrated not only in our country but across the globe. The term “arbor” signifies a group of trees, inspiring many to commemorate this day by planting trees. The event at the school began with a keynote speech by MMC Matlokga, followed by insights from various stakeholders, all aimed at imparting the significance of tree planting and maintaining a clean environment to eager learners.

MMC Matlokga highlighted, “Trees play a vital role in our lives, offering shade, shelter to diverse wildlife, and producing oxygen. That’s why planting trees is crucial for our environment.”

Speakers emphasized cleanliness and tree planting, with the main goal of raising awareness among the youth about the importance of environmental stewardship and its potential benefits. After the MMC and the school principal planted the first tree, students paid tribute to the dignitaries present, expressing their gratitude. A total of 20 trees, including seedlings for the school’s vegetable garden, were planted during this event.

Principal D.J. Maeko shared his perspective, saying, “Today, all the dignitaries that were here taught them the same thing not only through words but by actions as well. When I preach about cleanliness and taking care of the environment, they might not take my words seriously as they are used to me.”

In an interview with Ekurhuleni News, the MMC elaborated on other departmental strategies, including cleaning campaigns, aimed at fostering community awareness of the importance of a clean environment. These initiatives not only contribute to cleanliness but also create awareness about the significance of maintaining a clean environment, helping to reduce the presence of rodents and diseases in our city.
