The city takes top honours at Rand Water awards

The City’s consistent outstanding performance shone brightly at Rand Water’s 120 Years Legacy Celebration and Awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on Friday.

Ekurhuleni’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality drinking water and ensuring ample water supply to its residents sets a clear standard for other municipalities in Gauteng.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Department proudly secured two prestigious awards – the Water Wise and Bulk Water Distribution awards, respectively.

The Water Wise Award recognizes customers who demonstrate long-term commitment to water conservation through education and awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and the public, using various platforms.

On the other hand, the Bulk Water Distribution Award acknowledges municipalities or entities with exceptional water operations and maintenance programs. These encompass:

Timely reporting of leaks to relevant district or Rand Water officials Efficient response times for planned supply interruptions on municipal infrastructure Regular participation in joint monthly meter reading activities Assistance to Rand Water in detecting lead and formalizing illegal connections Consistent engagement and collaboration with the entity Clear and consistent communication regarding water supply interruptions within the municipal area Adherence to all required water management strategies

These accolades from Africa’s largest bulk water utility follow the City’s remarkable achievement of securing three consecutive Clean Audits from the Office of the Auditor General of South Africa. This success was further recognized with four awards for Excellent Governance received at the Inaugural Municipal Audit Awards by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) a few months ago.

“We are a city dedicated to hard work, always striving for excellence in serving the people of Ekurhuleni and the business community. Ekurhuleni stands among the top metros in the country due to the excellence we uphold in fulfilling our mandate to provide a better life for all,” stated City Manager Dr. Imogen Mashazi upon receiving the Water Department’s awards.

“Well done to everyone who contributed to this achievement. Let this be an inspiration for the entire staff to redouble their efforts. Together, let us continue to transform the City.”

Meanwhile, the City of Ekurhuleni extends its gratitude to residents for their prudent water usage, implementing the water-saving tips shared, and consistently reporting water leaks for swift action by the city.
