Transport Inspectorate Seizes Unlawful E-Hailing Vehicles

The Department’s Public Transport Inspectorate Unit (PTIU) conducted a crackdown on 24 October 2023 in Randburg, Johannesburg, impounding 21 vehicles operated by Bolt and Uber without valid operating licenses for e-hailing services.

Under the National Land Traffic Act 5 (2009, section 54 and 62), public transport operators must possess valid operating licenses to transport commuters for a fee on South African roads.

Of the impounded vehicles, 11 were Bajaj Qute models, categorized as compact quadricycles commonly used for affordable intra-city or last-mile transportation. They were taken to an impound facility in Benoni, and the drivers faced charges for operating without proper licensing. The vehicles’ release is contingent upon payment of impound fees and submission of necessary documentation.

The PTIU conducts such interventions to curb crime and uphold lawfulness, ensuring effective law enforcement and increased visibility in the public transport sector throughout the province.
