On Friday, 26 January 2024, between 10:00 and 13:00, officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) engaged in a high-density operation. The team, comprising Public Order Policing (POPS), the Dog unit (K9), the Northern Region Task Team, and Kempton Park Precinct Officers, successfully apprehended male suspects aged between 27 and 35.
During their activities at the corner of Highveld and Agony Street, EMPD Officers were approached by a concerned passerby who reported a recent supermarket robbery not far from their location. The passerby provided a description of the vehicle involved.
In response, officers patrolling Highveld Road identified a blue Toyota Corolla hatchback with four male occupants matching the provided description. An attempt to stop the vehicle failed as it sped away. A pursuit followed, and the Toyota was eventually cornered near the Kempton Park precinct.
Upon searching the Toyota and its occupants, officers discovered 2 smartphones, an undisclosed amount of cash, 7 tins of baby formula, and a 9mm pistol with tampered serial numbers, along with live rounds.
The four individuals, now facing charges including possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, reckless and negligent driving, possession of suspected stolen items, and potential armed robbery, were handcuffed and taken to the Kempton Park police station. They are expected to appear in the Kempton Magistrate’s Court soon.
