Case 120/09/2020 for vandalisation of Tombstones has been opened in the Vosloorus Police Station.
A complainant Mr Koena Kgomo (56) who is an Employee of the City of Ekurhuleni confirmed that when he knocked-off on (Wednesday) September 2, 2020 at the Vosloorus Cemetery, everything was still in order.
The following day he didn’t patrol because there were no duties to be performed, but on (Friday) September 4, 2020 about 8:00 in the morning he did a routine check and that’s when he discovered the vandalised graves, upon proper inspection, he noticed that all sections of the graveyard were vandalised. The tombstones were forcefully pushed down whilst others were deliberately smashed. It was clear to Mr Kgomo that this was done intentionally, approximately 2000 graves were vandalised to an estimated value of R200 000.
He does not know exactly who vandalised the graves but he stated that, “I think the incident happened during the night on the 2ndof September 2020(Wednesday) up until the 3rd of September 2020(Thursday), I don’t suspect anybody in particular and I don’t know what the motive is because the tombstones are only damaged and not stolen,” Kgomo sadly explained.
The Vosloorus SAPS is appealing to anyone with information to come forward so that the suspects can be apprehended.
