The 2021 local government elections are set to take place on a Monday for the first time in the history of South Africa. On Wednesday the 7th of September, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections will be held on 1 November 2021.
“This is in accordance with the constitutional municipal structures Act, the Act prescribes that the elections must be held within 90 days from the end of the five-year term of the local government administration,” Said the Cooperative Governance Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
Preparations are underway as political parties are working tirelessly towards the voting day while adhering to the instituted Covid regulations.
On Thursday the 9th of September 2021, the EFF held a community meeting at Thabong Day Care centre in Daveyton introducing its ward 70 councillor candidate, Zandile Papiyane. The meeting was part of the EFF’s campaign for the elections and they had a heart-to-heart talk with the community of Daveyton. “As EFF, we are here to get the mandate from the people, we believe that our purpose is to serve the public we are working for,” explained the ward 70 EFF Chairperson, Given Mudau.
Mudau further told Ekurhuleni News that, they don’t give people false hope; however they listen to their grievances and work upon those problems.
A concerned resident of Daveyton raised a concern about the open fields that contribute to crime. “Something needs to be done about these fields, it is really a matter of concern since there are even these random toilets that are not occupied by the community, As a community we plea for a solution, there is a lot that can be built in these fields,” said the Daveyton resident.
Zandile Papiyane, the Ward 70 councillor candidate expressed herself during the meeting and explained that as part of their daily campaigns, they do door to door campaigns around Daveyton to assure the community that they aim to do better.
“After the elections, we are planning to have a manifesto for the branch, we want to build a skills development centre for the community, and lastly our main goal is to improve communication between the people and the leaders.”
