WSD South Africa Expands Its SDG Book Club Initiative with 50 New Reading Corners

By Nobuhle L. Ngema

World Speech Day South Africa (WSD SA), continues to champion youth empowerment with the expansion of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Book Club. Thanks to the support of the National Lotteries Commission, WSD SA is currently rolling out 50 reading corners across the country, reinforcing its commitment to education, advocacy, and active citizenship.

The WSD SA SDG Book Club was launched in April 2019. Initially hosted at the Tshwane Leadership Foundation—a nonprofit organization serving vulnerable communities in Pretoria—the initiative has since expanded into villages and townships across South Africa.

World Speech Day South Africa is a platform that amplifies diverse voices, fostering dialogue and action on pressing global issues. Through its initiatives, including the SDG Book Clubs, WSD SA empowers youth to become informed, engaged, and proactive citizens and to serve as voices for change.

2025 marks the 10th Anniversary of WSD with WSD SA playing the official host of the Convention. This milestone event will comprise a multitude of local and global events from across the globe that will come together virtually.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WSD SA adapted by transitioning to an online platform, increasing participation and strengthening its reach. Today, the initiative continues to thrive, providing young readers with access to literature that fosters a deeper understanding of the SDGs and their role in shaping a sustainable future.

“Our SDG Book Clubs go beyond reading—they inspire young people to become advocates for change,” said Vino Pillay, National Ambassador and Executive Director at WSD South Africa. “Through these books, we encourage the youth to think critically about global challenges and take action in their communities.”
