Sibonelesihle “SihleG’’ Gumbi, a 20-year-old Afro-pop artist, aspires to produce tracks that resonate with everyday people based on her life experiences.
Gumbi emphasizes her songs carry messages of motivation and inspiration, reflecting current world events. “I draw from my life experiences, especially moments of pain and disappointment. Music becomes my therapy to express these feelings.”
Anticipating the release of her upcoming tracks ‘Akukholula’ and ‘Kusemhlabani La’, she shared her musical journey, noting her discovery of singing ability in grade 7 during a random selection for an assembly performance at Sinqobile Intermediate Primary School in Orange Farm.
She recalls receiving praise from peers and teachers, propelling her towards becoming a lead singer during school activities.
Despite excelling in singing and being chosen as a soloist in the Selelekela Secondary School choir during grade 12, she couldn’t fully pursue her passion due to academic obligations.
After relocating from Maboneng to Centurion and facing rejection at an Idols SA audition, Gumbi found solace in her love for songwriting, residing in Germiston presently.
Expressing her creative process, she writes songs based on her emotions at the time. Her unrecorded song ‘Akukho lula sikhala njalo…’ is slated for recording, alongside more songs waiting for an opportunity.
Her ambition extends to collaborating with seasoned artists such as Sjava, Aymos, Nomfundo Moh, Lwah Ndlunkulu, and Cici, aspiring to learn from their industry expertise.
