Young Girls Taught the Significance of Women’s Day

Katlego Malema, a 28-year-old former student of Mpumelelo Primary School and founder of KasiHEEP Network, returned to his roots in Tswelopele, Thembisa, to educate young girls on the importance of Women’s Day. The event, held at Mpumelelo Primary School, was organized in honor of Women’s Day and focused on empowering the children with knowledge about their history, the value of education, and the importance of self-love, respect, and understanding personal boundaries.
Drawing from the Xhosa proverb “Ligotywa lise manzi,” which emphasizes the importance of educating the young, Katlego sought to impart vital lessons to the future generation. He taught the girls about the struggles women faced, leading to the historic 1956 march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, and also addressed current challenges.
“Today, our focus is empowering the future mothers with history and knowledge,” Katlego said. “We are making sure that they know they have to report any form of abuse. They have to understand that they can’t be touched everywhere. And if they are touched inappropriately, they have to tell a parent immediately.”
The day aimed to uphold women’s achievements, recognize ongoing challenges and focus on women’s rights. The children were enthusiastic, reciting affirmations like “I am smart,” “I am brave,” and “I am the future” as they received their gifts.
One of the students, 9-year-old Alicia, expressed her joy, saying, “I’m happy to receive my gift, I will take it to my mother.”
Deputy Principal Mrs. Martha Mathamela praised Katlego for giving back to the community, saying, “I am very proud of Katlego. He was a student here, and I like how he is giving back to the community.” She also urged the children to go straight home after the event.
The event was also graced by Miss Thembisa, Palesa Mailula, who encouraged the children to be kind to one another and to report any abuse to their parents. “Stop bullying one another in schools and society, embrace each other,” Palesa advised.
This Women’s Day event at Mpumelelo Primary School served as a powerful reminder of the importance of education, respect, and empowerment for the next generation.
