Youngsters Spread a Message of Love Through Music

By Sbongile Sokela
Smezi, whose real name is Stephen Zulu Shongwe (32), and Nkaziieey, born Nkazimulo Ncongwane (16), are proving that age is no barrier when it comes to meaningful musical collaboration. Nkaziieey is currently a learner at DM Motseosele, balancing school and a growing music career, while Smezi brings experience and maturity to their creative partnership.
The two artists met through Facebook after Smezi posted on social media that he was looking for an artist. Nkaziieey responded by sending him an inbox message, and that simple interaction marked the beginning of a musical journey built on shared ideas and conversations.
Most of the songs they have worked on together revolve around love, relationship challenges and problems faced by couples. Through their music, they aim not only to reflect real-life situations but also to provide solutions and advice to listeners who may be experiencing similar struggles. After observing that many people go through a lot when it comes to relationships, Smezi and Nkaziieey decided to offer encouragement through music. This inspired them to create a song titled Thando, which carries a message that love still exists and is real, even in difficult times.
Their hit single Thando is a soulful expression of love and devotion. The song explores the complexities of relationships while confronting societal expectations and generational differences. Its lyrics convey deep affection and commitment, with the artists seeking guidance and acceptance in love. Although there is limited information on the specific inspiration behind Thando, songs with the same title often explore themes of love, heartache and resilience. For instance, Seemah’s Thando highlights the transformative power of love, using metaphors such as bamboo to symbolise strength and flexibility.
Smezi and Nkaziieey have also collaborated with Esona and Nkosi Vocalist, whose contributions have added depth and richness to their sound. These collaborations blend soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, creating a mix of R&B, Amapiano and pop elements.
The duo confirmed that they are currently working on new music. Nkaziieey has been nominated at the Mzansi Arts and Media Awards for Best Afro Pop, and the team is hopeful that this momentum could lead to a Metro FM nomination in the future.
