Youth Opportunities Grow Through NYS Program

By Sbongile Sokela

Bacha Ba Dichaba is making big strides in the fight against youth unemployment and poverty through its strong partnership with the National Youth Services (NYS) Program. With a growing number of young people benefiting from the program, the organization is proving its deep commitment to youth empowerment and community development.

Bacha Ba Dichaba consists of four representatives namely: Duduzile Mlauza, Lebohang Namane, Fernando Makhetha and Mpho Netshezwe.

In just two years, the number of youth participants has more than doubled.

“In the 2023-2024 cycle, we started with just 14 young people. Now, in 2025-2026, we have 30 youth involved. This shows that we are growing and creating more opportunities,” said a representative from Bacha Ba Dichaba.

The NYS Program does not just keep young people busy, it builds their future. Many of the past participants have gone on to find permanent jobs, internships, or gained skills that help them succeed in life.

“We are proud to say that some of our former volunteers now have full-time jobs and are doing very well. That’s what this program is all about, giving our youth the tools to grow and shine,” the representative added.

Looking ahead, the organization has even bigger goals. It is aiming to register 50 youth volunteers for the next NYS cycle.

“We want to reach more young people, especially those who are unemployed. Our goal is to give them a chance to learn, earn and become active citizens,” they explained.

One of the most powerful aspects of the NYS Program is its impact on poverty. By offering job experience, training, and support, the program gives youth a real chance to break the cycle of poverty.

“Youth unemployment and poverty are major challenges in South Africa. Through the NYS Program, we are doing our part to change that,” said the spokesperson.

With the success of the program so far, the organization continues to stand as a beacon of hope for young people who are eager to improve their lives. Their efforts show that with the right support, youth can thrive and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
